Description: 1928 New York Giants professional model hat with provenance to Roger Bresnahan c.1928. Roger Bresnahan's contemporaries recalled that he could play all nine positions as well as any player in the game including pitcher, the position with which he began his major league career. However, he eventually moved to catcher and was ultimately labeled one of the best to ever play that position by managers John McGraw and Branch Rickey. While playing for the Giants from 1902-1908, Bresnahan was one of several players who became a close friend of John McGraw, with whom he shared notable physical and personality traits. Compact, pugnacious, temperamental, fiercely concentrated on the game, and skilled in all the ways it takes to play, it was a natural transition for Bresnahan to move into the role of manager and coach after his playing career ended in 1916. After owning and managing his hometown Toledo Mud Hens through 1923, Bresnahan re-joined the New York Giants as a coach from 1925-1928. The offered cap dates to that period. The white wool pinstriped cap features a blue bill and classic embroidered interlocking "NY" on the front. Spalding manufacturer's stamp appears on the inside headband. A photocopy of an image of Bresnahan taken in 1928 shows him wearing what may likely be this very cap, identifiable by the unique alignment of the pinstriping in relation to the "NY" and the seams. Interestingly, the name "Jackson" is written on the interior in vintage black ink, suggesting the possibility that the cap was also at one time issued to Giants Hall of Famer Travis Jackson. The cap shows moderate soiling and usage wear throughout, yet retains outstanding display quality. The cap is an exceptional rarity with regard to its style and era alone, and is further enhanced by Bresnahan family provenance. The cap originates from the nephew of Roger Bresnahan, and includes his letter of provenance. Also includes LOA from Hunt Auctions: EX
