Description: Fine 1942 Ted Williams Baseball Writers of New York "Player of the Year" presentational wristwatch. High quality Longines wristwatch as given to Ted in honor of his selection as the 1942 Player of the Year by the New York Baseball Writers. 14K gold watch remains in running order and shows evident use most notably to its white leather band (possibly vintage replacement). The 1942 season was one of the finest of his career capturing his first triple crown leading the Major Leagues in home runs, RBIs, and batting average. Although his offensive numbers were clearly superior to any others in Major League Baseball, the baseball writers voted New York Yankee Joe Gordon as the Most Valuable Player for 1942 by 21 votes. While Gordon enjoyed a career season and the Yankees won the AL pennant, Williams was likely denied the MVP due to his tenuous relationship with the sportswriters.
