Lot Number: 2r

Description: Solly Hofman archive incl. (3) handwritten letter and signed contract (4 total pieces). Includes trio of handwritten letters dated Sept. 12, Sept., 13, and Oct. 28. Content relates to Chicago players whom have agreed to play and the Cubs remaining 1910 schedule. The final letter (Oct. 28) was enclosed with the return of Hofman's check/contract seemingly after it was decided the games would not be played and more significantly reads in part, "...Let me hear from you in regard to the new League as I am anxious to hear how things are breaking." Likely a reference to the formation of the Federal League. Also includes legal sized contract on thin paper stock dated July 23, 1910 signed by Fletcher and Hofman for participation in the All-Star Games which never took place (one of only 4 contracts within the collection). Hofman was regarded as one of the best utility players of the early 20th Century and was with the Cubs through their Championship seasons of the 1910s before jumping to the Federal League in 1914. All pieces signed in ink, "A.F. Hofman" rating 8 to 9 out of 10. (2) Letters display light age toning and incidental wear, (1) exhibits more pronounced wear with several edge tears, and the contract is lightly toned with wear/chipping largely confined to edges. Includes letter of provenance and auction LOA from JSA: Range VG-EX/MT
