Description: Fine Gale Sayers Chicago Bears professional model road jersey. Ditka, Butkus, Payton, Singletary, McMahon, and many others, graced the stadium fields of the Chicago Bears over the history of the storied franchise. Though all these names are legendary, the name which truly defined the team in its early years was Gale Sayers. Known as the "Kansas Comet," Sayers broke into the NFL in 1965 with blazing speed, scoring 22 touchdowns and compiling 1,374 rushing yards. His career was unfortunately shortened by several injuries to his knees, but that in no way tarnishes his legendary status as one of the greatest to have played the game. Offered is one of the crown jewels of the Don Biernat Collection, a Chicago Bears jersey worn by Hall of Famer Gale Sayers during the mid to late 1960s. The jersey exhibits heavy game use inclusive of surface wear, soiling, several small period team repairs, and wash wear. Additionally, there are numerous tiny surface "pulls" and holes which appear to be from a combination of game use, and in some instances, possibly non-game usage wear or moth damage. The original #40 numerals remain fully intact on front, back and both sleeves, all showing perfect wash wear and appropriate age fading. The originality of the #40 is significant not only to the value of the shirt, but also to fully document that Sayers wore offered jersey as no other Chicago Bear wore #40 before or during Sayers's tenure. Original navy blue piping remains in place encircling the collar and each sleeve proudly displays two blue stripes and one orange stripe. King O'Shea manufacturing tag (c.1960s) with size 46 notation is affixed to the tail front. With regard to originality, dating, and impeccable provenance, the offered exemplar must be considered one of, if not the, finest Gale Sayers game worn jerseys to have entered the collecting marketplace. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions: VG-EX
