Lot Number: 592

Description: Significant newly discovered 1889 E.R. Williams "Sepia" Baseball playing card game with original box and instructions. A previously unknown issue which varies from the commonly known E.R. Williams set in which all of the cards are issued in a sepia tone, and eight of the player cards feature different player combinations than the known checklist inclusive of several individual players, such as Billy Sunday, who do not appear in the traditional set in any combination. All of the player cards have been graded by SGC and include - (2) SGC 80 EX/NM: Brouthers/Latham and Keefe/Clarkson; (1) SGC 60 EX: Carroll/Fogarty; (11) SGC 50 VG/EX: Ewing/Anson, Weyhing/Kilroy, Brown/Carpenter, Welch/Long, Irwin/Corkhill, Stricker/Myers, Tener/King, Glasscock/Ward, Connor/Comiskey, Buffington/Caruthers, and Reilly/Hoy; and (5) SGC 40 VG: Orr/Sunday, Tiernan/Denny, Kelly/Foutz, Wolf/Pfeffer, and McKean/Tucker. The remaining (33) playing cards display as EX or better overall and exhibit mainly light surface toning/soiling. Original game instructions and game pieces exhibit light handling wear with a small tear/missing piece on the cover of the instructions. The original box exhibits wear mainly to the lid, which is missing two side flaps, and exhibits scattered moisture spotting. A few pencil notations are on the lid as well. The offered set was recently discovered within the New York family in which it has descended since its original ownership. Incredibly exciting discovery of a 19th century card set of importance. Playing cards: VG-EX; Instructions/Game pieces: VG/EX-EX; Box: GD-VG with note to missing side flaps.
