Lot Number: 227

Description: Barney Dreyfuss autographed typed letter. August 11, 1922 typewritten letter on Pittsburgh Athletic Club stationary with fine baseball content related to a testimonial being organized for the recently deceased Tommy McCarthy. Reads in part "Have Championship game with Philadelphia Monday. Unable to Spare Maranville owing closeness of pennant race. The Pittsburgh Club plays at Cincinnati Sunday and at Pittsburgh Monday, so that to send Maranville on for the benefit game would have meant loss of his services for two days. It is quite obvious that we could not do this with the Club making a fight for the pennant." Signed at the close, "Barney Dreyfuss" rating 8 out of 10. The letter is addressed to John Dooley, a noted Boston area fan and founding member of the Red Sox "Royal Rooters." Exhibits light age toning with typical mailing folds. Minor scattered wrinkling with small tear at upper right. Includes LOA from JSA: EX/MT
