Lot Number: 354

Description: Vintage uniform number "9" with direct attribution to Ted Williams c.1950. Period red on blue felt number "9" measuring just under 7" in height shows evident age/usage wear including surface pilling. The number originated from a former employee of the Sutcliffe Co, which was the largest sporting goods company in Louisville in the 1950s. At the time, the Louisville Colonels were a Minor League affiliate for the Boston Red Sox and received reissued Red Sox uniforms. The shirts were sent to Sutcliffe Co. to be renumbered and renamed for use by the Colonels. During this time, the original recipient was shown Ted Williams' Red Sox jersey by a co-worker, and was then given the original #9 from WilliamsÆ uniform, which was said to have "had his name stitched in the shirt." The uniform number is consistent in size and font with other documented Williams uniform numbers from the period. Rare and unique Williams uniform piece. Includes letter of provenance from the original recipient: EX
