Description: Significant 1949 Norm Van Brocklin College All-Stars game worn uniform and helmet. Following upon the success of Major League Baseball's All-Star Game initiated by Chicago sportswriter Arch Ward in 1933, the Chicago Charities College All-Star Game began in 1934. Ward recognized the immense popularity of collegiate football during the period and set forth to create a showcase game played between the best collegians and the leading professional players. Played at Chicago's Soldier Field, the games routinely shattered attendance records inclusive of a 105,000+ game in 1947. After leading the Oregon team to a Cotton Bowl appearance, All-American quarterback Norm Van Brocklin was selected to play in the College All-Star Game for 1949. Although defeated by the professional team, it marked Van Brocklin's final game as a collegian as he elected to enter the NFL draft and went to the powerful Los Angeles Rams in 1950. The offered uniform and helmet were worn by Van Brocklin in the 1949 College All-Star game. The beautiful red, white, and blue durene jersey bears an original "19" on front and back corresponding toVan Brocklin's uniform # for the game. Wilson mfg. tagging remains affixed inside the crotch flap with size 44 and dry clean flag tags present as well. The jersey remains in outstanding original condition showing appropriate wash and usage wear while presenting in its original vibrant colors. The uniform includes the original pants which retain their Wilson mfg. tagging on the interior waistband along with "May & Halas, Chicago" tagging. Pants also show appropriate use and wash wear remaining in all original condition. Red, white, and blue stirrup socks are also included. Notably, this incredible uniform also includes Van Brocklin's original helmet worn in the game. Wilson silver leather helmet with red and blue alternating striping to the top retains its original chin strapping and interior padding. Manufacturer's stampings and size 7 1/8 remain clearly visible with light to moderate general use and wear overall. The offered ensemble represents one of the most significant and fully documented groupings of its type to have entered the marketplace and is being presented for the first time publicly by the Van Brocklin family.
