Description: Rare 1939 Lou Gehrig Day Commemorative plaque. Ornately decorated brass plaque was crafted by Col. Charles J. Dieges of New York's famed metalwork shop Dieges & Clust. Plaque measures 4 1/4"x10 1/2" with an intricate vine and flower border surrounding a stirring tributary lyric at top by John Kieran, below which are printed the names of Gehrig's Yankee teammates. Wording at the top reads as follows, "To Lou Gehrig-We've been to the wars together; We took our foes as they came; And always you were the leader; And ever you played the game. Idol of cheering millions, Records are yours by sheaves; Iron of frame they hailed you; Decked you with laurel leaves. But higher than that we hold you, We who have known you best; Knowing the way that we hold you, We who have known you the best; Knowing the way you came through, Every human test. Let this be a silent token, Of lasting Friendship's gleam, And all that we've left unspoken; Your Pals of the Yankee Team". Archivally matted and framed with a reproduction image of Gehrig delivering his July 4, 1939 farewell speech. This is one of 6 examples that we know of in existence and was most likely given to baseball executives, teammates, or dignitaries: EX-MT
