Description:"Mattoon" decorated football helmet with victory "V." c.1942. Hard shell football with sewn on leather straps and sides has been painted white and lettered "5 Wins, 2 Defeats, 1 Tie, Yea Mattoon, 42." Accenting the front (just above the forehead are and below the painted on lettering) is a red and blue "V" done in the style of the "V for Victory" which was an allied symbol during World War II. Information provided by our consignor includes verification that the Mattoon, Illinois high school football went 5-2-1 in 1942. Initials on the inside appear to read "JJQ" and this may relate to player Jimmy Jones who was possibly their quarterback. Impressed mark on the back is visible under the paint but cannot be deciphered. Use and some general age related wear: VG-EX
