Description: Beautiful 1938 Francis Gallagher College All-Stars jersey with his "1938" sweater and related material - killed in action during World War II. Visually striking jersey was issued to player Francis Gallagher of Yale University for use in the 1938 Chicago Tribune College All-Star game which was played against Sammy Baugh and the Washington Redskins. Gallagher would go on to join the Navy in service to the Country during World War II and made the ultimate sacrifice having been killed in action in the Guadalcanal campaign in 1942. In addition the being the most appealing design we have yet seen for a College All-Star jersey the offered example is among the more well documented and includes a variety of material related to Gallagher's time both playing football and his untimely passing while serving in the Navy. Includes jersey done in red with blue shoulders that are embroidered with star decorations. The number "23" appears on both front and back. Spalding tag inside has adjacent size (42) and Dry Clean Only flag tags; pair of matching socks; heavy wool sweater with "1938" lettered on the front. There are a pair of Spalding and size (42) tags inside; Gallagher's original All American Board of Football "Card of Merit" pronouncing his "All America Rating" for 1937; a pair of telegrams related to his appearance in the 1938 College All-Stars game; a scrapbook filled with newspaper clippings that largely relate to football (some to Gallagher himself) and tucked inside were his Fairfield High School letterman's' certificates (7 total related to baseball, football, and basketball); a number of letters and telegrams related to Gallagher having gone missing in action and later acknowledgement that he was presumed deceased; and a 1944 dated letter from the Yale Football Y Association related to a resolution passed in his honor along with a copy of the resolution.
