Description:June 30, 1910 Jimmy Austin "Novelty Throwing Contest" trophy from Doc Powers Day. Three handled trophy cup has an enameled Philadelphia Athletics logo flag applied to one side above an ornate "Doc Powers Day, Shibe Park June 30th 1910" medallion. The later piece features an elaborate decoration of a catcher complete with uniform and equipment. Engraved on another side, "Novelty Throwing Contest, Won by James Austin, New York American B.B.C." The piece stands 10.25" tall and measures just under a foot across from handle to handle making for a choice display. Scattered tarnish and areas of loss to the upper surface plate. Doc Powers caught in the Major Leagues from 1898 until April 12, 1909 when, playing in the opening game at Shibe Park, he sustained injuries that would lead to his death a few days later. A tribute was held the following season and nearly (15,000) fans packed the stadium in his honor. A number of notable players, from several teams, attended participating in competitions to help raise funds for the education of Powers' children.
