Description: 1955 Willie Mays Sid Mercer Player Of The Year Award (1954 NL MVP Season)(Mays photomatch). Rectangular wooden plaque with silverplated facade affixed to the front with engraved/impressed text reading, "Player Of The Year Sid Mercer Memorial Award To Willie Mays, For His Outstanding Achievements As An Outfielder And His Rich Contributions In Skill And Sportsmanship To Baseball, Presented By New York Chapter BBWAA, Jan. 30, 1955". Mays' 1954 season arguably ranks as the finest of his career with his .345 batting average (league leading) and 41 home runs and (130) RBIs earning Willie the first of two National League Most Valuable Player Awards. He would lead the New York Giants to a World Championship, the only World Series title in his illustrious Hall of Fame career. The wooden plaque (12"x15.5") has a touch of light scattered wear with metal "Lambert Bros." manufacturer's emblem affixed to the bottom margin. Scattered light to moderate surface wear to the silverplated placard. One of the more important awards of Mays' tenure with the Giants while still based in New York.
