Description:Rare 1954 Willie Mays Santurce Baseball Club award. Rare award plaque with relation to the iconic Puerto Rican team that Mays played for during the Winter Ball season of 1954-55. Walnut wooden plaque has engraved brass placard on the front to Mays from the Santurce team "In Recognition of His Outstanding Feats in Baseball by Winning the Batting Championship, The Most Valuable Player in the National League, and the Athlete of the Year for 1954". Players and team officials for Santurce are noted at bottom including Don Zimmer and Herman Franks. Notably not listed was a young outfielder Roberto Clemente who was on the 1954-55 team with Mays after Clemente returned from his call up to Montreal in February of 1954. Small brass crab figural found at the top of trophy signifying the Santurce team symbol. Very rare early career award with relation to Mays' Santurce team considered by many to be the greatest Caribbean team in the history of the game. 14" tall.
