Description: Significant 1963 Willie Mays MLB All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Award.` Ted Williams famously remarked, “They made the All-Star Game for Willie Mays”. Mays appeared in a remarkable twenty-four MLB All-Star contests tied for second all time with Stan Musial and behind only Hank Aaron (25). Willie took great pride in his All-Star Game selections and played with incredible effort on behalf of his National League peers. The 1963 Midsummer Classic was played at Cleveland with Mays occupying his familiar position in center field. The NL was leading by a score of 5-3 in the eighth inning when Joe Pepitone laced a long fly ball that Mays made an incredible catch on all the while having his foot become partially entangled in the wire fence. Mays also collected two RBIs on one hit and scored twice fittingly earning honors as the Most Valuable Player of the game. Presented is the Arch Ward Memorial Award which Mays was given as the MVP of the game standing an impressive 31” tall with two-tier walnut wooden base pedestals supporting four silverplated columns. Large figural silver plated finial at top with baseball shaped ornament on bottom pedestal having impressed titling, “Willie Mays July 5, 1963 Cleveland, OH”. Additional titling engraved on silverplated placard at front of the base, “Arch Ward Memorial Award Presented by the Rawlings Sporting Goods Company”. Scattered minor surface wear to the silverplating and wooden surfaces noted as the only mentionable condition points.
