Lot Number: 269

Description: UPDATED ESTIMATE: Important 1965 Jackie Robinson Brooklyn Dodgers professional model home uniform. Cream colored flannel jersey has “Dodgers” team name across the front in the style of Los Angeles 1965 uniform with number “42” below. The iconic number, the only one which has been universally retired by Major League Baseball, also appears on back. Rawlings tag on the front tail notes size (44) and “Robinson” is chain stitched below. Wash tag inside has adjacent “Set 1 1965” flag tag. Matching pants are likewise by Rawlings (size 38) and have similar wash and year tags. An embroidered strip tag reads “Robinson 38 42”. Both the jersey and pants display light use overall with some more pronounced spots of soiling to a few areas ideally appropriate for use in such an event. Few small moth holes noted for accuracy. Robinson retired after the 1957 season as the Dodgers were leaving Brooklyn to bring Major League Baseball to the West Coast. They left behind a litany of heartbroken fans and a few of their most notable players. Over the course of many years which followed Jackie was well known to decline most invitations to Old- Timers games or other baseball related functions (due, at least in part, to his disappointment with the lack of African American managers or front office personnel). There are scant few exceptions which include a game played in Cleveland on July 18, 1965 between members of the 1954 Indians team and a group of All-Star players including Jackie Robinson. Jackie made a heroic effort to play in the game due to his high regard for Indians President and co-owner Gabe Paul flying overnight from CA to attend and playing on a “gimpy knee” noted in articles of the period. One such newspaper article pictures Robinson that day wearing a home uniform with other player images (Berra and Kluszewski) also consistently wearing single game use home uniforms for the All-Star team. Dave Grob with SGC Authentication has accordingly graced the uniform with the highest grade assignment of “Superior”. Jackie Robinson game worn uniforms, of any type and quality, are the most coveted of any professional athlete noting Babe Ruth as perhaps their only equal. The offered example represents the first of its type that we are aware of to have surfaced and represents an almost certain unique opportunity at an attractive pricing level in comparison to the playing era examples selling between $4-$6,000,000. PLEASE NOTE: the estimated price range was listed incorrectly in the print catalog; the estimated price range of this lot is $150,000-$300,000. A monumental collecting opportunity. Includes LOA from SGC/Dave Grob (Superior) and LOA from Hunt Auctions: EX
