See a Picture of this Item 1 1999 New York Yankees full-size World Championship trophy. Scarce salesman's sample or replica version of the championship trophy produced by Balfour in commemoration of the Yankees 1999 World Championship. Standing a full 25" tall, these full-sized replica trophies were produced in far fewer quantities than the miniature replica versions more often seen in the marketplace. The trophy features brass pennants with team names around the perimeter of a large brass circle with a crown finial. Yankees and Braves enameled World Series press pin facades adorn the center area with "World Champions New York Yankees 1996" in black lettering on the front. As baseball prepared to close its books on the twentieth century, it seemed fitting that the team who had dominated most of it was returning for their thirty-sixth Fall Classic. The 1999 Bronx Bombers had scored a whopping nine-hundred runs in the regular season and answered their critics who felt that the record-setting '98 season had been a fluke. The Atlanta Braves had risen as a dominant force in the National League over the last decade and were returning for their ninth Series (winning titles in three different cities). Despite some heavy-hitters, and the Cy Young winning combo of Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux, the Braves were no match for the Yankees juggernaut. Behind their own Cy Young winning combo of Roger Clemens and David Cone, the Yankees pitched and slugged their way to a series sweep of the Braves: NM ($10,000.00-$15,000.00) $14,000.00

The offered baseball is only the second Ruth/Gehrig signed ball with shared panel positioning that we have handled in over 15 years. Whether by coincidence or intentionally done, the fact remains with rare exception that Ruth and Gehrig did not sign the same panel on a baseball. The ball itself exhibits evident use showing moderate soiling to the surface. Faint, nearly indiscernible vestiges of ink appear on one of the side panels, which are noted to for accuracy only. The stub remains fully intact with a small area of paper/adhesive residue on the surface of the back from spot adhesion to a period scrapbook page along with a full news article detailing the game (included). The stub has several horizontal creases, one of which does break the surface on the back. Interestingly, the game also showcased the final Major League pitching appearance of Hall of Famer Walter Johnson. Attendance for the game was very small totaling approx. 10,000 in number, making the offered stub notably rare. Very historic and desirable ticket is the first that we have handled: VG-EX (with note to creasing) ($4,000.00-$5,000.00) $2,600.00

See a Picture of this Item 67 Scarce and possibly unique 1923 Babe Ruth advertising broadside. Imposing 28"x42" matted and framed original paper advertising broadside depicting an oversized image of Babe Ruth batting at the left side. The poster was issued to promote baseball games played by the National Vaudeville Artists' Sick and Benefit Fund baseball team. A message from Ruth is printed on the poster and reads as follows: "To my pals of the N.V.A. baseball club, You boys have the fastest semi-pro baseball club I have ever seen and I trust your 1923 tour will be a howling success. You certainly have the greatest attraction of its kind in this country and I only wish I could go along with you on the trip. I have enjoyed your work on the stage and diamond alike. I hope your tour will bring in a lot of money to the National Vaudeville Artists' Sick and Benefit Fund and in that I am joined by all the members of the Yankee team...Babe Ruth." Below the image of Ruth and text is an advertisement for a game between "N.V.A. vs. St. Louis" to be played at Clinton Oval. Marked at the bottom "National Printing & Engraving Co. L.I. City, New York". Overall appearance is strong with the condition remaining very fine given its original fragility. The poster has been laid down on acid free linen backing and has had some professional restoration to several areas mostly at joints from original fold lines. There are a few line creases and small tears which have also been reinforced with some minor inpainting in addition to a few small losses in the background area which have also been inpainted. The offered broadside is one of the earliest and more substantive Ruth related exemplars of its type. With note to its impressive large format sizing, 1923 dating corresponding to the Yankees first World Championship and opening of Yankee Stadium, and sheer scarcity, the poster must be considered among the pinnacle of Ruth display items in the hobby: VG-EX ($10,000.00-$15,000.00) $8,500.00

See a Picture of this Item 79a Lot of (3) New York Yankees payroll checks written to and endorsed by Leo Durocher, Fred Merkle and Carl Mays. Three notable baseball figures received these checks for their service as players for the New York Yankees in 1927, 1925 and 1922 respectively. The Durocher and Merkle checks are signed by Jacob Ruppert and Ed Barrow, while the Mays check is signed by Ruppert and T.L. Huston. Each player has added his endorsement signature to the reverse. Durocher and Merkle rate 7/8 out of 10, while Mays is a 6 out of 10. A second individual added his signature to the back of the Mays check. Each of these three men endured controversy in their careers. Durocher was an often disagreeable character, dogged by clashes with authority, umpires, and the press on his way to becoming the fifth winningest manager of all-time with 2,009 career victories. Merkle is best remembered for his famous base-running gaffe "Merkle's Boner" that cost the Giants a victory in 1908. Carl Mays, in spite of being one of the better right-handed pitchers of his era, is well known for throwing the pitch that struck Ray Chapman in the head on August 16, 1920, making Chapman the only major leaguer in history to die as a direct result of an on-field incident. Checks average EX. Includes LOA from JSA ($1,500.00-$2,500.00) $950.00

See a Picture of this Item 80 Babe Ruth New York Yankees professional model hat c.1920-30s. Navy blue flannel cap features the Yankees iconic overlapping "NY" logo embroidered on the front. Spalding manufacturer's stamp appears faintly on the interior leather sweatband, as does the embroidered, script style player designation "Ruth G.H." A remnant of an additional tag appears to the left of Ruth's name. Heavy usage wear is evident including perspiration induced soiling throughout the interior, general soiling on the exterior and a couple of areas of deterioration on the seam of the bill, which could be easily restored if so desired, but was left intact to preserve the historical integrity of the hat. Dating from the height of Ruth's indomitable reign as baseball's greatest and most celebrated star, the hat is believed to be one of only three surviving Babe Ruth New Yankees game used hats known to exist. Having descended within the family of a Cleveland area tavern owner who obtained it personally from Ruth, the hat is accompanied by a vintage slip of paper bearing the notation "Wally C. Morgan Babe Ruth cap" in an unknown hand that has been kept inside the cap for decades. Utilized in an era long before the advent of batting helmets, hats such as these saw action both in the field and at the plate. They were often kept for multiple seasons, and as such, generally garnered more personal care than other tools of the trade considered more disposable. Next to a player's glove, perhaps no other item enjoyed a more symbiotic relationship with its owner given the importance of the fit, customization of the bill and extent of wear. Period images often depicted players rolling their hats up and placing them in their uniform pockets, which further increased the rarity of their survival today. Few items in the realm of sports memorabilia could equally capture the essence of American sport. The hat has been cautiously preserved, retaining a look and feel that reaches back to the golden years of baseball, when Ruth was King of the Diamond. In comparison to other Ruth game used equipment pieces, such as bats or possibly even uniforms, the offered hat may well be the rarest of the category given the aforementioned evidence. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions and a notarized letter of provenance from the family of the original recipient: EX ($150,000.00-$200,000.00) $285,000.00

See a Picture of this Item 81 Exceptional Babe Ruth professional model baseball bat inscribed and presented to Broadway starlet Tessa Kosta c.1924. Through the late 1920s, Tessa Kosta was a star of the musical stage. Introduced to Broadway at the age of 13, she won immediate acclaim as a gifted singer and actress, appearing in such musicals as 'The Beauty Shop' with Raymond Hitchcock in 1914, 'Chu Chin Chow' with Tyrone Power Sr. and Florence Reed in 1917, and 'The Royal Vagabond' with Frederic Santley. Her major roles on Broadway were in 'Lassie' in 1920, 'The Chocolate Soldier' with Donald Brian in 1921, 'Caroline' in 1923 and 'Song of the Flame' in 1925. She was also a member of the exclusive and iconic Ziegfeld Girls Club. Among the legions captivated by the beauty and talent of Tessa Kosta was Richard Madden, a theatrical agent and writer who represented Eugene O'Neill and Cole Porter. The two were married, and together cut a path through the whirling social scene of New YorkÆs high society. No individual was more of a presence in New York society in the roaring twenties than Babe Ruth. Ruth arrived in the Big Apple in 1920, after being sold to the Yankees by Boston Red Sox owner Harry Frazee, himself a burgeoning theatre impresario. The move by Frazee, one that would live infamously in classic American folklore, not only changed the course of baseball history, but also prompted a sea of change within sports and popular culture that still resounds today. In the media capitol of the world, Babe RuthÆs boundless charisma and unmatched prowess on the baseball diamond elevated him to a level of popularity in his time greater than that of any public figure in American history. That the paths of Babe Ruth and Tessa Kosta would cross is not remarkable in and of itself. Their social status and RuthÆs fondness for beautiful starlets would have surely kept them in similar circles. The incredible irony involving their intersection involves Tessa's husband, Richard Madden, and Harry Frazee, the man largely responsible for Babe Ruth becoming a New York Yankee. The popular theory behind FrazeeÆs desire to sell Ruth to the Yankees has been that Frazee needed money to finance his Broadway play titled ôNo No Nanette", which was co-authored by Richard Madden, according to The New York Times. ôNo No Nanetteö opened on Broadway in 1925 to phenomenal success, providing some vindication for Frazee, who was vilified in Boston for sending the great Babe Ruth to the rival Yankees. Frazee enjoyed his triumph only briefly, succumbing to a form of kidney failure called Bright's Disease on June 4, 1929. After Richard Madden passed away years later, Tessa Kosta became a lifelong beneficiary of royalties associated with ôNo No Nanetteö. The offered Babe Ruth bat, inscribed by him and gifted to Tessa Kosta, is a Louisville Slugger 125 model measuring 35 3/4" long and weighing an incredible 42.4oz. Both the Louisville Slugger centerbrand (1921-31 labeling) and the "Babe Ruth" facsimile name stampings remain very bold. The bat presents perfect evidence of use including ball marks, stitching impressions, grain swelling, and cleat marks. Pronounced lathe marks appear on the knob and barrel ends. A portion of the barrel has been flattened in an area consistent with a label down left handed batter. Babe Ruth has autographed the back of the barrel with a personalized inscription, ôTo Tessa Kosta From Babe Ruth April 27th 1924". A portion of the word ôFromö, as well as portions of the date notation have been partially enhanced by an unknown hand in the period, which is visible only upon very close examination and is mentioned for accuracy only. In fact, non-enhanced portions of "From" and the dating notation remain quite bold and legible. RuthÆs salutation and signature are original and unaltered rating 9 out of 10. The bat remains in beautiful original condition exhibiting a rich, deep brown color with the integrity of the original surface patination untouched since its use by Babe Ruth. With great pleasure, Hunt Auctions has offered several of the finest Babe Ruth game used baseball bats extant, including the bat attributed to Ruth's 59th home run of the 1921 season, and a signed bat used to hit a home run in the 1923 World Series. See a Picture of this Item 99 1933 American League All-Star team panoramic photograph. Baseball's newest contribution to the glamour and romance of American sports, the All-Star Game, made its debut on July 6, 1933, at Chicago's Comiskey Park. It was initiated at the insistence of Arch Ward, a sports editor for the Chicago Tribune, to coincide with the celebration of Chicago's Century of Progress Exposition. The single game featured the most glittering assemblage of ball-playing talent ever brought together on the diamond at one time. Even then, it was Ruth's star that shone brightest. Arguably the game's biggest attraction, Ruth even drew the respect of his National League counterparts. St. Louis hurler and NL starter "Wild Bill" Hallahan summed up the general mood in saying, "We wanted to see Babe Ruth. Sure, he was old and had a big waistline, but that didn't make any difference. We were on the same field as Babe Ruth." His flair for the dramatic unwavering, Ruth blasted a home run that proved to be the difference in the AL's 4-2 triumph that day. Offered is an original 7"x17" panoramic photograph picturing (23) members of the victorious 1933 American League squad, manager Connie Mack, and five other team personnel. The photograph demonstrates excellent clarity with no significant condition flaws apart from some paper remnants adhered to several areas of the white borders, the likely result of a previously existing matte. The image is affixed to a rigid paperboard backing. The bottom section of the original mount (detached) accompanies the photo and features a complete record of the individuals depicted including Hall of Famers Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Mack, Joe Cronin, Lefty Grove, Bill Dickey, Al Simmons, Lefty Gomez, Wes Ferrell, Eddie Collins, Tony Lazzeri, Jimmy Foxx, Earl Averill, Rick Ferrell, Charlie Gehringer and company. This is undoubtedly one of the finest photographs extant representing the first American League All-Star team: EX-MT overall with note to backing. Matted and framed. ($7,500.00-$10,000.00) $23,000.00
