After capturing the Negro National League pennant, the Eagles went on to defeat the mighty Kansas City Monarchs in the World Championship series. Cecil Cole was a pitcher for the 1946 Eagles with a record of 2-2. The offered ring originates from a direct descendant of Cecil Cole and is being offered for the first time publicly. The ring displays an intricately designed Eagle on the top with an inset solitaire diamond of approximately .45 carat weight. The diamond does have some wear incl. a moderately sized chip to one side. "Newark Eagles" lettering is found along the top and bottom of the center area. One side panel has raised lettering, "Negro World Champs 1946" with the other panel having "Pitcher" and "14" for Cole's player number along with a ball/glove graphic. Marked by "R.Johns Sun-Lite" mfg. on the interior ring band which is also inscribed, "Cecil Cole" in block lettering. Overall condition remains very fine with light general surface wear. Given the lack of financial support for the Negro Leagues during the period, individual awards and rings were infrequently given to players. First example of its type that we have handled with note to its rarity and great significance as a Negro League Championship player award piece. Includes letter of provenance from the Cole family: EX-MT ($15,000.00-$20,000.00) DNS

See a Picture of this Item 792b Cache of vintage correspondence and paper items regarding the New York Giants' proposed purchase of Hank Aaron's contract c.1952. The documents within the offered lot relate to one of the more storied "non-occurrences" in baseball history. Just imagine if the Giants' lineup on opening day of the 1953 season at the Polo Grounds in New York had been announced as, "Batting third...Hank Aaron, Batting fourth...Willie Mays..." In May of the 1952 season, the New York Giants were very interested in the contractual rights for Henry Aaron, who was playing for Syd Pollock's Indianapolis Clowns. John Schwarz, secretary for the New York Giants Farm teams, had been negotiating with Syd Pollock and had arrived at a tentative deal for Aaron at a salary of $250 per month. Pollock was also negotiating simultaneously with the Boston Braves who offered $350 per month. Pollock informed Schwarz that Aaron would not play for less than $250. Before Schwarz could make a counter-offer, Pollock received an agreement for Aaron that same day from the Boston Braves, leaving the Giants empty handed. It is interesting to consider whether a Mays/Aaron combination might have kept the Giants in New York. The lot consists of the actual telegrams from Schwarz pleading with Syd Pollock to move forward with the sale of Aaron's contract to the Giants, a signed letter from Schwarz on Giants stationary, and a C.Feeney auto. typed letter regarding Monte Irvin dated April 1952. Highly significant set of period documents to include: Three original Western Union telegrams sent by John Mullen, who was the secretary of the Braves Minor League club in Evansville. Two of the telegrams are essentially the same, dated May 28, 1952 and May 29, 1952, each accepting the agreement between the Braves and the Indianapolis Clowns to purchase the contract of Henry Aaron for a total of $10,000. Additionally, the telegrams indicate that Aaron is to be paid a salary of $350.00 per month. Lot also includes a typewritten letter on Boston Braves stationary confirming the enclosed check (not included) for $2,500 as an initial payment for Hank Aaron's contract. The letter contains priceless content including, in part, "...By all accounts it appears that we have a fine prospect in Aaron..." The letter is signed at the bottom by John Mullen. These very documents are related to one of the most significant player acquisitions in Major League history as the Braves narrowly missed losing Aaron to the New York Giants who had also been doggedly pursuing the rights to Aaron (see related lot in this auction). The lot also includes a third telegram sent by Mullen regarding two other players. Incredible letter and pair of period telegrams from the archives of the architect behind the initial Major League contract for Hank Aaron. The letter's simplicity and polite reference to his parent's approval are characteristic of a player who carried himself with dignity and grace throughout his career.
