The torrential rain storms that postponed the game for a day were also the likely culprit for the slight smudging on the ball. Typewritten six page document includes a title page, "Major League Contract with Commissioner of Baseball Dated as of February 4, 1969". Interior pages reflect the conditions and acknowledgements of Kuhn's tenure including the length of term, a pledge by Kuhn to uphold the duties and responsibilities of the office, and other related conditions. Incredibly, the final page is signed by Warren Giles, Walter O'Malley, Gabriel Paul, Joseph Cronin, Warren Giles, and Bowie Kuhn. Signatures remain in nearly pristine condition rating 10 out of 10. The lot also includes a portion of Kuhn's original employment agreement, which includes a signature page autographed by MLB Secretary/Treasurer Charles Segar. See a Picture of this Item 630 Civil War era Colt revolver c.1860s as descended within in the family of Bowie Kuhn. The gun remains in its original condition including wooden handle and cast iron barrel. "Colts Patent" is stamped on the side panel with four corresponding serial numbers of "36428" stamped on the barrel, stock, and handle butt. The gun appears to remain in fine overall condition with some general wear and aged patination to the metalwork. According to Kuhn family history, the gun originated from the mother of Bowie Kuhn, Alice Roberts Kuhn. The pistol descended from Alice Roberts' grandfather, William Mathews Merrick. Prior to William Mathews Merrick, the genealogy continues as follows: William Duhurst Merrick B Annapolis MD 1793 D Wash DC 1857 Capt. - US War of 1812 US Army Member - US Senate 1838-1845 William Duhurst MerrickÆs son by his second wife was George Clarence Merrick. It is believed that the Colt revolver belonged to G.C. Merrick, Bowie's maternal great-great-grandfather, who fought in the Civil War for the Confederacy (1st Regiment, Maryland Cavalry). The gun was eventually handed down to Alice Roberts Kuhn. Colt pistols of any type are highly desirable with the offered example having the added cache of belonging to the former Commissioner of Major League Baseball. See a Picture of this Item 635 Bowie Kuhn's Sheraton secretary desk c.1820-40. American mahogany slant front Sheraton style desk features a full secretary back with a galleried backsplash. The desk remains in fine original condition exhibiting some general use including light wear to the writing surface. The top right drawer of the base of the desk retains a period shipping label as sent from "Mrs. Louis Kuhn of Arlington, VA" to "Bowie Kuhn of Ridgewood, NJ". The desk was frequently used by Commissioner Kuhn when conducting business from his home in New Jersey during his tenure with Major League baseball. One can imagine the late night discussions that took place at this very desk between Kuhn and the likes of Finley and Steinbrenner. One of the hallmarks of Bowie Kuhn's tenure as Commissioner was the fact that he frequently appeared at various Major League Baseball events. Kuhn believed, and rightfully so, that it was his duty to take a hands-on approach to the office, and it remains to date one of the attributes for which he is most remembered. Offered is the original beige sportcoat that Commissioner Kuhn so often wore during those many public appearances. The coat exhibits evident use and retains its original "Alfred Nelson Co., New York" label on the interior. Included with the coat is one of Commissioner Kuhn's hats which he also frequently wore at Major League Baseball events. See a Picture of this Item 643 Woven silk Japanese Uchikake kimono. Taisho Era (1912-26) kimono in a formal design of chrysanthemums and other flowers arranged on open fans. Toru Shoriki, Chairman of the Board of Yomiuri Shimbun, presented the Kimono to Commissioner Kuhn in 1984. Accompanying papers in the original box identify the store (Takashimaya Company) and name of the workshop where it was made. On February 4, 1969, Bowie Kent Kuhn became the fifth, and youngest, Commissioner of Major League Baseball at the age of 42. His tenure would last an impressive fifteen years during one of the most pivotal periods in baseball history. Like all Commissioners, Kuhn weathered his share of controversial events. Unlike many Commissioners, he remained true and consistent to his core beliefs, earning respect and admiration from many within the game including some of his most bitter opponents. Offered is the presentational ring given to Commissioner Kuhn in recognition of his service to Major League Baseball. Ornate ring features a nearly flawless solitaire diamond of ?approximately .83 carat weight in a crown setting, beneath which is the former "MLB" logo Kuhn helped design.
