Full standing die cut cardboard Christmas tree store display advertising Spalding athletic goods stands 68" tall with three tiers of "branches". Colorful piece was used in stores to display various pieces of Spalding sporting goods during the holiday season. The display remains very clean with strong original colors exhibiting only light general wear to a few areas. The lot also includes its original Spalding shipping box (staining) and the assembly instructions (display breaks down to flat sections). Interesting grouping of period boxing materials originally obtained from the Jim Jeffries Boxing Barn during the 1930s. The items were originally obtained by John Lynes who defeated Jeffries (by knockout) in an exhibition boxing match in 1938. Included in the lot is a vintage certificate noting that Lynes defeated Jeffries which has been signed by Jeffries; Handwritten letter by John Lynes as sent to "Friend Briggs" of York, PA with content documenting the gloves as having been obtained directly from Jeffries. He writes, "I asked James J.Jeffries for the set from his barn for you."; Original envelope addressed to Geo. Spangler from John Lynes; Pair of "Official Intercollegiate Conference" boxing gloves with "15" written in black ink inside (remnants of red mfg. labels); Red leather Spalding boxing glove (15 written in black ink on the interior); and a Rawlings leather boxing glove. The statue is signed by artist "P.Testi, New York" with a foundry impression/dating by P.Mori 1910, New York". Large two panel cardboard display measuring 36"x40" depicts a very attractive color lithographic football game scene. A quotation from Teddy Roosevelt printed across one of the panels reads, "...Hit the line hard, don't foul, don't shirk, but hit the line hard". Reverse of the display features a three panel advertisement for Winchester flashlights and batteries. Piece has a few typical edge chips and some creasing mostly to the top and bottom borders which is commonly seen on this style of display. Interior images remain very bold with vibrant original color and one 1/2" hole at the top of the left panel. Rare A-frame original store display bat rack originating from the archives of H&B stands an impressive 66" tall. Retains its original wooden marquis sign at the top advertising Louisville Slugger bats as "Used and Endorsed by the Batting Heroes of All Ages". Sign has been repainted at some point, most likely by H&B as an "update" to the original design. Body of the display retains a fine original surface and includes all but (4) of its original (72) wooden bat display pegs. See a Picture of this Item 187a Significant Ty Cobb professional model baseball bat with Hillerich & Bradsby Co. factory side writing c.1917-21. Louisville Slugger 125 dash-dot-dash model bat measures 34 1/2" long and weighs 36oz. The bat shows strong use including ball marks, grain swelling, and a repaired handle crack. The side of the barrel has factory side writing in grease pencil that reads, "Ty Cobb 191?". Although faded, the date appears to be either 1917, 18, or 19. The first three numerals are clearly "191". In addition, the barrel retains remnants of a paper factory shipping label, which has left a shadowed area from lack of exposure to light as seen on the remainder of the bat. To date, there are less than half a dozen documented Ty Cobb professional model game bats with Hillerich & Bradsby Co. factory side writing, one of which resides in the permanent collection of Louisville Slugger Museum.
