True to his legendary standards of excellence, Joe ended his career winning yet another World Championship for the Yankees against the New York Giants. Although his retirement at the end of the season was a disappointment to many fans, it is fascinating to read period news accounts which clearly illustrate that they understood and respected Joe's decision. Few athletes in sports understand that one of the greatest attributes of a champion is to recognize when it is time to leave with grace. From Joe DiMaggio's first time in a Yankee uniform up until the season in which he wore the offered uniform, he exhibited nothing but grace on the field. Includes LOA from MEARS Authentication: EX-MT ($100,000.00-$150,000.00) $145,000.00

The bag retains its original leather handles and remains fairly clean overall with some typical light to moderate usage wear. It is unclear as to what the "45" refers to on the end panel as only two players wore that number during Joe's career; Frank Hiller in 1947 and Clint Courtney in 1951. Possibly refers to a date of 1945 or it may have been used by either Hiller or Courtney and then by DiMaggio. Very rare early period Yankees equipment bag in fine overall condition: EX ($1,000.00-$2,000.00) DNS

To imagine where the offered trunk has traveled and what historic pieces of equipment it has protected truly illustrates the essence of its appeal: EX ($10,000.00-$15,000.00) $10,500.00

Superb image is one of the finest within the DiMaggio collection: EX-MT ($750.00-$1,000.00) $3,100.00

See a Picture of this Item 965 Historic Joe DiMaggio record breaking hit #45 baseball from the 56 game hit streak. In 1961, Sports Illustrated writer Dave Anderson wrote the following passage regarding 1941 and DiMaggio's streak, "For the fans there was no escape from the magnetic force that drew them to their radios to hear the news announcer report the grim but still dreamlike news of the war in Europe and then, at some point in the program, add, 'and Joe DiMaggio got his hit today to extend'....". The 1941 baseball season was one of the finest in Major League history, featuring Ted WilliamsÆ walk off home run during the All-Star game, Williams' .406 batting average, the Yankees/Dodgers World Series, and Joe DiMaggio's immortal 56 game hit streak. From May 15th to July 17th, 1941 the nation was captivated by Joe DiMaggioÆs exploits in the battersÆ box. During the streak, he passed the modern mark established by George Sisler at 41 games and then broke the all time record of 44 games by Willie Keeler. On July 2, 1941 the Yankees were playing the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. Just one day earlier Joe DiMaggio had tied Keeler's all time mark of 44 games in a row with a base hit. His first two at bats on July 2nd produced two outs. During his third at bat with the count at two balls and no strikes, DiMaggio laced a fastball from pitcher Dick Newsome into the left field seats to set the new all-time record of 45 straight games with a base hit. The ball itself is a Harridge American League baseball with evident use including a small grass stain near the sweet spot and a 2" abrasion on the sweet spot. Inscribed in period ink on the side panel is, "Hit-No. 45 Sam J. Strumolo 1464 71st Brooklyn, NY -7-2-41-". Based on period information, it appears that Strumolo had retrieved the record breaking baseball at the game and then later returned it to DiMaggio. DiMaggio seemingly had everyone in his corner during these amazing weeks in 1941. Interestingly, these incidents occurred on the heels of DiMaggio's bat being stolen just a few days earlier. When the bat was found, which DiMaggio had used to break SislerÆs record, he auctioned it for the War drive bringing in just over $1,600.00. The offered baseball represents one of the most highly regarded records in sports history. Little did DiMaggio know that he would continue for another two weeks finally ending the streak at 56 games. The lot includes (2) vintage photographs from the DiMaggio collection relating to the 45th hit including a view of Joe crossing home plate after rounding the bases. One of the most significant event baseballs to have entered the marketplace. Includes LOA from James Spence Authentication relating to the dating of the ink: EX ($50,000.00-$75,000.00) $55,000.00

Very rare and desirable Joe DiMaggio home run baseball with relation to the what many believe is the single greatest record in sports history. Includes LOA from James Spence Authentication relating to the dating of the ink and Schulte's signature: EX ($10,000.00-$20,000.00) $26,000.00

See a Picture of this Item 967 Ken Keltner professional model baseball glove used in the July 17, 1941 56 game hit streak ending game. On July 16, 1941, Joe DiMaggio coasted to his 56th consecutive game with a base hit. He went three for four, scoring three runs in helping his team to a victory over the second place Indians. The third baseman for the Indians was Ken Keltner, who was widely regarded as one of the best defensive third basemen in the league. The Indians would be ready for the Yankees on the 17th looking to keep their slim postseason hopes alive and the Indians third baseman would look to the June 1, 1941 game as a reminder of how to overcome Joe DiMaggio. It was in this game that Joe DiMaggio extended his streak to 17 straight games with a hard ground ball which tipped off of Keltner's glove at third base and went into left field. After the inning was over, Keltner passed DiMaggio and heard Joe say something to him but could not make it out over the noise of the crowd. These events would play a pivotal role in ending DiMaggio's hallowed streak just over one month later in Cleveland. During their next series with the Yankees in July, Ken Keltner recalled the June 1st game and the DiMaggio play. When interviewed after the game that ended DiMaggioÆs streak, Keltner discussed the June 1st game in relation to two plays he had just made, remarking "DiMaggio said something when the inning was over as he was leaving the bases near the foul line. I couldn't hear what it was, but I remembered the ball he hit on the play. So I played him deep tonight, maybe a little closer to the line than usual." These subtle changes led to two outstanding plays on hard hit balls from Joe DiMaggio on July 17th. In each case, Keltner made diving plays and fired to get DiMaggio out by a fraction on two occasions. DiMaggio was asked how deep Keltner was playing him and remarked, "Deep? My God, he was standing in left field." With a slight position adjustment and two exciting fielding plays, Joe DiMaggio, and the nation, had lost its streak. The offered glove was used by Keltner in the historic game on July 17, 1941. According to DiMaggio family history and a first person account, the glove was sent to DiMaggio by the Keltner family after Ken's death in 1991. The glove is a Rawlings Ken Keltner professional model glove with facsimile stamped signature on the interior heel. Rawlings tag (1938-1945 dating period) remains affixed to the original backstrap. Glove exhibits strong usage with surface wear and a period repair to an interior thumb seam. Keltner facsimile signature stampings remain very clean and legible. Incredible baseball relic relating to one of the great moments in baseball history when the streak was halted in Cleveland on July 17, 1941. The lot includes a vintage photo from the DiMaggio collection taken after the game picturing DiMaggio holding up "0" signaling no hits. Includes LOA from MEARS Authentication regarding dating and professional quality and a notarized letter of provenance from a DiMaggio associate who had a personal discussion with Joe DiMaggio regarding the glove: VG-EX ($20,000.00-$30,000.00) $31,000.00
