Ball was obtained by the consignor and is being offered for the first time publicly, Ott is the key to collecting the 500 home run hitters and this example is quite simply superb.   706 Al Simmons single signature baseball. Rare example of the Phila. A’s slugger signed in bold blue fountain pen on a well used red and blue stitched baseball, “Hello Kid, I’ll be sick too if we don’t cop the World Series, Al Simmons”. This ball was presented to a child who had been diagnosed with leukemia which is what the referral in Simmons’ personalization regards. Ball is toned and was clear coated but signature is very bold rating 9 out of 10. Simmons died in 1956 of a heart attack and single signed balls are seldom offered, accompanied by a letter of provenance from the family: Ball: VG, Signature: NM $1,800.00-$2,500.00 $2,300.00
 
See a Picture of this Item 707 Rabbit Maranville single signature baseball c. 1947. Grady “Official Playground” baseball with light age toning signed on the sweet spot by HOF’er Rabbit Maranville. Signature rates 8 out of 10 with only a hint of scuffing on the “ra” in Maranville. Maranville was one of the greatest shortstops in the history of the game recording 6,413 putouts in 2,154 games, he died at the age of 62 in 1954 less then one month before his election to the Hall of Fame. Ball was obtained at July 23,1947 Philadelphia Athletics game where Maranville had signed a few balls and was throwing them into the crowd. Clean off white Barnard AL ball with bold stampings signed by Ruth in an attractive green ink on the sweet spot rating a strong 7 out of 10. Ball has light age wear including a few minor scrapes but is very clean given the period and is accompanied by the Barnard AL ball box.   709 October 12, 1923 Babe Ruth auto. baseball. Well used NL ball with period inscription and signature on side panel, “Babe Ruth Oct. 12th 1923”. Signature is very faint rating only a 1 or 2 out of ten, inscription is slightly better rating 2/3 out of 10. Ball was obtained in the period and although light is absolutely genuine and made further clear through the usage of a black light. The Yankees lost Game #3 which was played on the date of this ball but went on to win the World Series in six games. Historically interesting ball: PR-GD $400.00-$500.00 $475.00

See a Picture of this Item 753 New York Ball Club cabinet photograph by Joseph Hall c. 1888-89. Image pictures an unlisted variation of the typical Hall New York cabinets in that they are posed in a studio setting in full uniform and listed as the “League Champions 1889” yet the photograph bears the typical 1888 copyright date by Hall. The Giants were the dominant team of the era with players incl. Buck Ewing, John Ward, Roger Connor, Tim Keefe, James “Orator Jim” O’Rourke, and Mickey Welch. Their record for 1888 was 84-47 while 1889 was 83-43. The image has some light surface wear incl. a tiny etched “x” on Jim Mutrie’s image, mount has typical age wear but curiously measures 1/16” short on the top border and is unevenly cut. This issue is known to have been miscut on occasion and to the knowledge of the consignor it was not done by a family member but nonetheless is the case: VG-EX (With note to border cut) $3,500.00-$4,500.00 $4,400.00

See a Picture of this Item 783 Fine “Buxton Wonders” African American team photograph c.1900-1910. Rare large format studio portrait measures 16”x20” picturing 10 players in uniform with a manager and equipment posed in front. The team derived from the coal mining town of Buxton,Iowa whcich was predominantly African American and their record over a three year span was an impressive 93-3. Three players were identified through research of the orig. owner incl. George Neal who went on to play for the Kansas City,KS Giants and the Chicago Giants, Charley King, and a Mr. Bowman (The only two Negro Lg. players in that era named Bowman were Bill and Emmett).The image itself has some surface soiling which most likely could be cleaned and retains fine contrast. Slight horizontal area of moisture damage at bottom of image housed in its’ original floral decorated gesso frame. Strong eye appeal with folk art qualities and exceedingly rare to find African American team photos of this size and age: EX $3,500.00-$4,000.00 $2,200.00

Gibson is credited with 962 lifetime home runs against various levels of competition and quite definitely ranks among the finest baseball players of any race to ever wear a uniform.
