See a Picture of this Item 1004 Rare and Important 1901 Opening game photograph of Bennett Park. Sepia tone cabinet photo taken at the Opening game of the the American League Detroit Tigers who played the Milwaukee Brewers. Bennett Park was one of the great early wooden ballparks which opened in 1896 named after catcher Charlie Bennett who was one of the first players to challenge the reserve clause. The park was located in the Irish "Corktown" section of Detroit and although the stadium was eventually replaced the site remained as the longest running site for professional sports in America with the 1999 Detroit Tigers playing on the exact location in Tiger Stadium. The rarest of the five trophy set the offered example is seldom seen, graceful fielder reaching for a ball standing on metal platform. Silverplated base is uninscribed and retains wooden painted base with Dieges & Clust metal tag. Trophy retains wonderful unpolished original patina and has only light overall age wear. See a Picture of this Item 1050 Early Univ. of Virginia baseball equipment lot with possible relation to Happy Chandler c. 1915-25. Includes a Virginia pennant, Univ. of Virginia "Boston" style baseball cap (small bill stamped Spalding inside), and a studio cabinet photo of a Virginia player in uniform signed by Happy Chandler. Unusual group in that Chandler never attended Virginia and it although the photo slightly resembles him we do not believe it to be him. The signature however is almost definitively that of Chandler and signed in the period. We conclude that he signed this photo possibly to a friend at Virginia as he attended Kentucky, nonetheless a fine group of period equipment. Cravath was one of the premier home run hitters of his era playing from 1908-1920 primarily for the Philadelphia Phillies. He led the league five times in home runs hitting 24 homers for the 1915 Phillies an impressive number for the period. Speaker was one of the greatest hitters in Major League history with a lifetime batting average of .344 and was one of the original inductees to the HOF.
