See a Picture of this Item 630b Note: The majority of the following single signed baseballs (Lots 631 to 700) originated from the collections of Harry Evans and James Armstrong. The significance of the group lies not only in the quality and rarity of the players but in the quantity offered. During the 1940-60's when most of these autographs were obtained it was almost unprecedented to "collect" single signature baseballs. The rarity of some of the examples present is such that they are the only known exemplars in many cases. For accuracy, both Evans and Armstrong were known to have marked balls with "Sign Here" tags or printed the player's name on side panel for identification. In several cases these period identifications were subsequently removed leaving small areas of toning on a ball or vestiges of pen impressions. We mention this fact for the purpose of accuracy only and in the case of any major single signed balls we have noted any such possible occurrence, in the case of Lot 700 the aforementioned statement is a general and random occurrence. The quality and quantity of this group is not likely to again be seen. $0 DNS

See a Picture of this Item 640 Earliest Known Mickey Mantle single signature baseball c.1956. In 1956, 24-year-old Mickey Mantle, already a perennial All-Star, firmly established himself as one of best players of all time by winning the Triple Crown and the first of what would be three American League MVP awards. At the time, there were no autograph shows; in fact there would be no autograph shows until the sports memorabilia market developed nearly 30 years later. For that reason, all single-signed balls from before the mid-1980's are exceptionally rare, and Mickey Mantle single-signed balls from the 1950's are virtually unheard-of. The style of MantleÆs signature went through a gradual but marked transformation from 1951 until the early 1960's, and from comparisons with authentic signatures on team balls, which can be conclusively dated, we have determined that the offered ball was signed circa 1956. WhatÆs more, itÆs a beautyùa near-perfect blue-green ballpoint ink signature rating 9 out of 10 on a snow-white mint Harridge Official American League ball. Anyone can own one of the thousands of balls that Mantle signed at autograph shows in the 1980's and 1990's long after his playing career; only one person will own this ball from perhaps the greatest season of MantleÆs storied career. To our knowledge this is the first McGinnity single signature baseball to be sold at public auction and given the fact that he died in 1929 it will likely be one of (if not the only) example to become available to the collecting public. See a Picture of this Item 674 1917 Tim Murnane Day auto. baseball from Buck WeaverÆs Family. Tim Murnane played in the 1870's for several National Association teams before becoming a charter member of the Boston Red Stockings in 1876. He stole the first base in the history of the National League. After his playing career he became the baseball editor for the Boston Globe and authored what became the first regular baseball column. Eventually he became President of the Eastern League and even published his own baseball guide. The baseball world was shocked when, in February 1917, Murnane was striken with a massive heart attack and died while attending an opera at BostonÆs Shubert Theatre. Seven months later the Red Sox organized an ôAll-Starö game to benefit his family. The game, played on September 27, 1917 and raised $14,000, pitted the Red Sox against an All-Star team drawn from across the American League, with the Red Sox prevailing 2-0. The Red Sox pitcher that day was none other than 22-year-old Babe Ruth, who interestingly had won a trophy for hitting the longest fungo in a pre-game contest. Buck Weaver, one of the ôAll-Stars,ö had the presence of mind to procure a Ban Johnson Official American League ball and assemble a team ball of the All-Star squad at a time when team ball-signing was in its infancy and not a widespread practice. The offered item is that ball, which is remarkably well-preserved. The 22 fountain pen signatures include Babe Ruth (one of the earliest Ruth signatures extant on a baseball), Walter Johnson, Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker, Connie Mack, Hugh Jennings, and many more. Includes LOA from PSA/DNA J. Spence-S.Grad: EX ($8,000.00-$10,000.00) $6,500.00

Signatures remain very strong for the most part ranging from 6-9 out of 10. Grouping of signatures on this ball is arguably among the best in existence with (12) Hall of Fame members including seven of the original HOF inductees. Interestingly Babe Ruth would play his first game on May 20, 1922 after serving a suspension since Oct. 16, 1921 from Kennesaw M. Landis. Remarkable autographed piece with import, rarity, and quality regarding both players and condition: Ball: VG, Signatures: Range EX-NM ($12,000.00-$14,000.00) $9,500.00

See a Picture of this Item 677 1934 American League All-Star team auto. baseball. The second All-Star game was held at the Polo Grounds in New York. Although starting National League pitcher Carl Hubbell put on an extraordinary show for the hometown fans when he struck out Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, and Joe Cronin in succession the powerful American League team rallied for a 9-7 victory. This ball is an extraordinary artifact of that game with an amazing (37) black fountain pen signatures on a Harridge Official American League ball including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Walter Johnson (coach), Jimmie Foxx, Earl Averill, Heinie Manush, Joe Cronin, Al Simmons, Mickey Cochrane (2), Red Ruffing, Charlie Gehringer (2), Bill Dickey, Lefty Grove, and 24-year-old pitcher Mel Harder, the star of the game, who one-hit the National Leaguers over the last five innings to clinch the American League victory. Browns Manager Rogers Hornsby, Athletics Manager Connie Mack, Detroit Tiger Goose Goslin (2), and Cleveland Indian Sam Rice, all Hall of Famers who attended the Game, also signed. Sigs range from 7-9 out of 10. Impossibly rare, and it is hard to imagine a nicer or more complete team ball from this early All-Star Game when titans still roamed the diamond. See a Picture of this Item 679 Babe Ruth professional model baseball bat c.1923-25. Louisville Slugger 125 model bat measures 35" long and weighs 35 ounces (could have weighed as much as 5oz. more when shipped from the factory). Barrel of bat has some staining at end, small square stain, and a small hole that has been filled in on backside of barrel. During the era in which this bat was produced Ruth was hitting full stride as a player including his first World Championship as a New York Yankee in 1923. Babe Ruth game used bats remain one of the hallmarks of a great sports collection and given the status of Ruth as one of the greatest batsman in Major League history is a requisite piece for any significant Ruth collection. Includes LOA from David Bushing/Dan Knoll: EX ($20,000.00-$30,000.00) $17,000.00

See a Picture of this Item 680 Phenomenal Babe Ruth Career-Era single signature baseball. It should not be necessary to state the significance of Babe Ruth in twentieth-century American sports and popular culture and the iconic stature of a Babe Ruth single-signed baseball. As such, we may simply state that the offered Babe Ruth autographed baseball is among the elite few to be rated as the finest in our hobby. Ball originated from a New England area estate and is being offered publicly for the first time, a light clear coating has preserved the signature in the same condition as on the day it was signed. It has, however, one additional quality that the majority of the other exemplars in its' class lackùit was signed during RuthÆs playing career whereas most others were signed in the 1940's. Not only that, from the ball (an E. S. Barnard Official American League ball with blue and red stitching used only from 1928 to 1931) and the style of the signature we can determine that the offered ball was signed around the peak of RuthÆs career in the late 1920's. Sophisticated collectors know the extreme relative rarity of top condition single-signed Ruth balls signed during his playing career; the majority of the few extant examples were signed after he retired from baseball. This one is simply one of the best, with a jet black fountain pen signature rating 9/10 out of 10 perfectly centered on the sweet spot, where it belongs. Breathtaking. Includes LOA from PSA/DNA J. Spence-S.Grad: Ball: EX-EX/MT, Signature: NM-MT ($40,000.00-$50,000.00) $37,000.00

See a Picture of this Item 700 Significant Collection of over (2600) autographed baseballs. One of the most incredible autographed groupings with baseball relation to ever be offered at public auction and certainly the largest which was primarily assembled by James Armstrong. Armstrong was nothing less then a visionary in the field acquiring signatures of 19th century players who most likely had never even signed a ball before, having players signed with interesting notations incl. statistics, and maybe most significantly having only one player sign most baseballs in the group which was rare enough in the 1970's let alone in the 1950-60's during which he received most of the signatures. The group consists of approx. 2,615 auto. baseballs with the vast majority being single signed. A large portion are signed on Official NL or AL balls incl.
