Reach by his business associates in affectionate commemoration of the Fiftieth Anniversary of his honorable and successful Mercantile Life 1866-1916". Stamped sterling by Black, Starr, & Frost under base, Alfred Reach was, of course, one of the founders of Reach Sporting Goods which was one of the dominant manufacturers of the late 19th and early 20th century. Significant and possibly unique "Zimmer's Own Base Ball Game" c.1890's. Recently discovered in the attic of an Ohio estate the offered game possibly represents the prototype for the rarest of all baseball related board games. The 1893 "Zimmer's Base Ball Game" of which there are under five known examples was Patented on Feb. 7, 1893 and features a slightly different board layout with the most notable difference being player portrait vignettes surrounding the playing field. The example that we are auctioning is marked as "Patent Pending" and only has an image of Chief Zimmer. Overall size is 23" square retaining original walnut molded edge framing. Playing field has varying degrees of wear incl. some edge chipping and soiling, missing pitching piece. Rare "A.M. Draper's Glove Shop" trade sign c.1850-1881. Rectagular pine hanging double sided sign measures 10"x74" with original black and white painted lettering and decor. Sign exhibits typical wear incltaining, border chipping, and is missing 1" on "A.M...." end. Alvah McQueston Draper was born in 1828 and was a member of the Plymouth, NH Draper family who founded the Draper & Maynard Sporting Goods Co. in 1881. Alvah was one of three Draper cousins who were involved in glove manufacturing (All manners of gloves not limited to baseball). Jason Draper was involved in the manufacturing of the gloves while Alvah sold the gloves in the retail shop for which this sign hung on the main street in Plymouth at some point between 1850-1881. Thie 'glove manufacturing' business is what allowed D&M Sporting Goods to advertise a manufacturing history dating to the 1840's.
